Financial aid for veterinary bills
Can Labrador Retriever Rescue, Inc. help me with my vet bills?
LRR cannot help with your vet bills, but maybe you can get help from one of these groups.
Do you have advice for dealing with high vet bills?
Ask your vet about prices up front. Feel free to ask what other options are available if the first treatment suggested is too expensive. Ask if you can get along without doing some of the recommended protocols. The vet has to recommend everything possible or could possibly be held liable for substandard care.
High vet prices are partly dictated by the elevated standard of care that is now expected of animal health professionals, as well as the increased number of lawsuits. Lab tests, x-rays, and other diagnostics all need to be paid for.
If you have a good, ongoing relationship with your vet, you should be able to discuss treatment options and your budget frankly.
Get a second (or third) opinion from another vet for treatment options and costs. Less expensive options might be available. Prices vary as well, depending on local competition, the veterinarian's experience, and other factors. It doesn't hurt to ask.
If you live near a veterinary school, call and ask if they offer any clinical trials for your pet's specific condition.
The CareCredit plan is available for anyone who qualifies. You apply over the phone at the vet clinic, with help from the receptionist. This plan allows clients to pay off the bill in monthly installments.
Make phone calls, shop around for prices or clinical trials, see if friends or family can help out with the bill.
For the future: Veterinary insurance is available from several suppliers. As with all insurance, you must buy the policy before you need it.
